Music

Curriculum Intent

Music, song, and dance are accessed daily and an integral part of our learning at St Joseph’s. We provide regular opportunities for children to create, play, perform and simply enjoy the beauty of music throughout our curriculum. We aim for children to develop specific skills, knowledge and understanding and develop critical thinking through exposure to a wide variety of musical forms throughout history and around the world.

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  1. Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  2. Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  3. Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations

Curriculum Implementation

Music is a part of a daily teaching, and you will hear singing throughout the day in a variety of subject areas.

Children are taught weekly music lessons through the Charanga music scheme and evidence is recorded through See Saw. Charanga is a progressive scheme taught from EYFS to Year 6 whereby music is explored through active listening and performing activities which enable understanding of the context and genre of music. Children develop their singing voices, body percussion and whole-body actions. They learn to handle and play classroom instruments effectively to create and express music and compose their own pieces of music.

Children in Year 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to learn their own instrument through Derbyshire Music Partnership and perform a concert to celebrate and share their achievements.

We also encourage children to become a part of our school choir and organise regular performances to showcase our talent!

Curriculum Impact

Music is taught from EYFS and these foundational skills are built upon through KS1 and KS2. Music is assessed during lessons and teaching is adapted based on the needs of the children to ensure progression. We encourage children to have confidence and express themselves through the power of music. We aim for children to develop a deep knowledge, understanding and appreciation of music as a part of their understanding of the world.
